What's for breakfast? Oats-- if they're steel cut and combined with the right ingredients, can be an uber healthy breakfast. Not to mention satisfying and delicious! Now, I'm not talking about the packaged microwaveable kind. These are highly processed, the nutrients destroyed. The oats I used are Trader Joe's "Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats". They're quicker to make than traditional steel cut oats, but much more nutritious than rolled or powdered oats. I think they're better tasting too.
Now, let's get creative with our oats... there's no right or wrong here. The idea is to use the oats as a base, and add healthy toppings to add flavor, texture and balanced nutrition.
My favorite oat "creation" is simple and really good. Below you can see the ingredients I use. That's chopped apple, sesame seeds, coconut-almond-chia milk, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla extract, raw coconut butter, ground ginger and a dot of real maple syrup. I recommend adding spices plentifully to both enhance the flavor and the health value.
All together, this steel cut oat recipe is a delicious way to bolster your health, balance blood sugar and support digestion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
